Winteringham travelled to Grimsby for the second round of the county cup. They were up against AFC Wybers, a reasonably fit and well organised side. The game was relatively even, with both sides having good chances to score. Wybers opened the scoring when their striker pounced on a loose ball in the Winteringham penalty area, and passed the ball under the diving Winteringham keeper into the right hand corner of the net. The game continued to be fairly even, with some good defensive play from both sides. It could have been 2 a piece at half time, but it was Wybers who went into the interval with a narrow lead.
The second half started the same as the first, with both sides up for the battle. The Winteringham back four worked tirelessly and limited Wybers to shots from distance. Winteringham were getting into some good areas of the pitch, but were unable to really test the keeper. With around 15 minutes remaining, Winteringham made a change bringing on Dave Bramhall. Dave scored with almost his first touch of the ball. He chased down a through ball and kept his cool in front of goal by passing the ball past the keeper with his left foot. Bramhall had the chance to put Winteringham into the lead a few moments after his goal. Oli Freeman closed down the full back, won the ball and passed to Underwood. Underwood threaded the ball through to Bramhall, who again kept his cool in front of goal and passed the ball passed the keeper. Winteringham were put under a fair bit of pressure in the final minutes of the game, but the defence remained solid and Winteringham were rewarded with a hard fought victory.
It was a good all round team performance, which proved if you don’t panic and keep putting in the effort, that you will get your chance to get back into most games. Winteringham showed a good team spirit considering the side had been pieced together with numerous players absent due to injuries and other reasons. If Winteringham are to turn their season around after a poor start, then the players will need to show a similar appetite in the forthcoming months.
