Winteringham Reserves Upset The Apple Cart
Manager Ian Brown had a major headache leading up to this fixture, for the first time this season he had 16 players to chose his side from. Winteringham Reserves were really up for this fixture and started very strongly. They didnt give Appleby any time on the ball, and created a number of good chances in the early stages. It was Sean Stevenson who broke the deadlock with a strike just inside the penalty area. Winteringham continued to pressure Appleby after the restart and could have extended their lead with a little more composure in front of goal. Winteringham's lead was doubled when Luke McMahon drove the ball goalwards, an Appleby defender attempted to head the ball over the bar, but ended up heading it past his own keeper. Karl Hull scored his first goal of the season towards the end of the 1st half; a corner was swung in by Paul Smith which Karl superbly volleyed past the Appleby keeper. Winteringham continued pushing forward and created more chances, they looked very dangerous from corners and Karl Hull could have had a hat-trick on another day. During the half time team talk the players were instructed to be a little more composed in front of goal, it was suggested with a little more composure they could have scored 15. Winteringham continued to dominate the game in the second half; they were more up for the fight and were first to all the loose balls. Keil Leisk scored the fourth when he rounded the keeper and from a very tight angle tapped the ball into the net. Winteringham created a number of chances but were not as dominant as they had been in the first half. Towards the end of the game Appleby got a little more of the ball but were unable to test goalkeeper Paul Mitchell, and to be honest it is difficult to remember Paul having a serious save to make all game, which is a credit to the defence which looked solid throughout. Winteringham Reserves seem to have finally found their feet. They struggled earlier on in the season to find some form, but now everyone is available they are looking a much stronger team. Appleby were a shadow of the team that Winteringham played earlier in the season, but that shouldn't detract from a very good performance from Ian Brown's side.
