by Anthony Hubbard
Winteringham Goalscorers: Josh Hubbard, Robbie Parker Winteringham Man of the Match: Dec Marshall
Winteringham met Auld South Yorkshire in the quarter final of the League Cup on a very boggy pitch in Keadby. After a shaky start Winteringham took a hold of the game and dominated possession. Winteringham were first to the ball all over the pitch, and really pressed Auld South and with a little more composure in front of goal could have been two or three up before half time. There were some tasty two footed tackles flying in that appeared to go unpunished. This didn’t cause Winteringham to shy away from a tackle though, and they carried on winning the battle all across the park. Dave Moulds playing in goal in the absence of a regular goalkeeper didn’t have a shot to save in the first half, and gathered any cross into the box with ease. Josh Hubbard was given his chance to show what he could do with Dave Moulds playing in the nets and Chris Parkinson unavailable. Dec Marshall continued his development and played very well for the duration of the game. Winteringham continued to press Auld South after the restart and created some really good chances. They took the lead when Dan Hubbard picked out Nathan Kerins on the right wing. Nathan crossed into the box, the defender cleared, but the ball dropped to Josh Hubbard who drove the ball sweetly past the keeper for his first goal of the season. Winteringham began to look a little shaky after the goal and failed to do the basics. Having said that Auld South still struggled to find a way past Dan Hubbard and Ady Brocklesby as the Winteringham defence remained solid. The Auld South equaliser came as a bit of a gift, Ady Brocklesby played the ball back to Dave Moulds and as he attempted to kick the ball it hit one of the many bobbles and the ball sliced off his foot behind him. An on-rushing attacker was left with a simple tap in despite Dave Moulds attempts to get back to clear. At the point of the equaliser Winteringham should have been out of sight. Lee Moulds had two efforts cleared off the line and the Auld South keeper kept his side in the game on more than one occasion with some very good saves. The game went into extra time, Winteringham continued to dictate the play but were unable to make the most of the dominance. Auld South took a shock lead when an Auld South player was down injured and the referee was calling for the ball to be put out to stop the game. The Auld South winger, unopposed as Winteringham believed he was going to kick into touch, decided rather than kicking the ball out, he would cross into the box, Lee Markham tried to head the ball over the bar, but unfortunately the ball flew into the top corner. Lee played very well and shouldn’t blame himself for the goal. The team should learn to play to the whistle in future. A change in tactic followed the goal, Ady Brocklesby was replaced by Dom Bowdler, and Winteringham went for a 3-4-3 formation to try to find a way back into the game. Winteringham created endless chances and it was looking like they weren’t going to be able to find an equaliser to force the game into penalties, until a free kick was awarded on the half way line. Dave Moulds stepped up and pushed the whole team forward. Dave’s cross into the box fell to Robbie Parker who wasted no time in firing the ball into the top corner. The game went into a penalty shoot out. Unfortunately Winteringham were unable to keep their composure and lost 4-3. Winteringham played very well and can feel very hard done by not to have won this game especially considering the number of chances they created. You couldn’t question the effort, desire and shear energy of the Winteringham players, it was just one of those days where lady luck was on the side of Auld South. Dan Hubbard looked as solid as ever at the back, and put his body on the line on more than one occasion. Dec Marshall and Josh Hubbard linked up well in the centre of the park. Lee Moulds also had a very good game and worked himself into the ground playing upfront and caused problems all game.
