Its all About Taking Your Chances

I find myself in a strange position as I write this report, as I have never had to write a report on a game that was so one sided and yet Winteringham still lost. I have seen games where a team has lost when a draw was probably the correct score, but on this occasion I feel even a draw would have been harsh on Winteringham as they had more than enough chances to win three or four games. But guess it comes down to taking your chances when they come your way, and that’s what Auld South Yorkshire did. It could be put down to Auld South’s greater experience and ability to win ugly to why Winteringham’s young side came away with nothing. It was a great result for Auld South as it leaves them in with a shout of winning the league, and they knew it was a fortunate result. One player commented as he left the pitch “how the hell did we win that”. Auld South now need Winteringham to do them a favour a beating Pepperells on Sunday to give them a slim chance of winning the league. It’s good that the league has gone down to the final day, just a shame Winteringham are no longer in the hunt. Second place is a slim possibility and third is now guaranteed, so it will be Winteringham’s most successful season to date, which sets things up very nicely for next season.

Dom turns to celebrate
Winteringham v Auld South Yorkshire - goal 1

Winteringham get off to the best possible start as Dom Bowdler’s shot hits the back of the net (above) and a delighted Dom turns to celebrate (right)

The game started very brightly for Winteringham, who were playing a 4-3-3 formation. The first chance came within minutes. Ady Brocklesby hit a free kick towards the penalty area; the ball was cleared but dropped to Robbie Parker who’s shot went just over the bar. Winteringham took the lead moments later when a big goal kick from Mick Scott caused the Auld South defence all sorts of problems. Dom Bowdler capitalised on the uncertainty in the defence and broke clear, his shot was parried by the keeper, but Dom has the quickness of mind to spin and bicycle kick the rebound into the top corner. Winteringham continued to pressure after the restart despite a few players struggling to completely adapt to the new system. A chance fell to Lee Moulds, Robbie Parker swung a corner in from the left and Lee met it with his head, unfortunately his header went just wide. Another chance fell to Lee moments later when Gaz Barlow threaded a ball through for him, he did the right thing by shooting across goal, but unfortunately it went just wide of the far post. Moments later Winteringham were queuing up to put the ball in. Robbie Parker sprinted down the right and put superb cross towards the far post, Ryan Markham, Dom Bowdler and James Tune were all waiting unmarked for the cross. Ryan got his head to the cross but it went just over.

Lee Moulds looked to have extended Winteringham’s lead when Dom Bowdler put him through one on one with the keeper. Lee’s first shot hit the keeper, but he got his foot on the rebound and directed the ball goalwards, unfortunately an Auld South defender managed to get back and make a vital clearance. Minutes later Lee Moulds picked up the ball about 35 yards from goal and unleashed a pile driver of a shot which forced the Auld South keeper into a fine save. Nothing came of the resulting corner and Winteringham went into the half tine interval leading 1-0, but feeling it should have been more.

Winteringham began the second half very sloppily, and a collection of defensive mistakes led to Auld South being awarded a corner. A failure to switch on from the corner, saw Auld South take a short corner, the Auld South player drifted into the box and had time to play a pass across the six yards box, Winteringham were still on their heels and Auld South had a simple tap in. The goal sprung Winteringham back into life and they began piling some pressure on Auld South. Gaz Barlow drove into the box and picked out Robbie Parker to his right, unfortunately Robbie’s shot hit the side netting. Moments later a half chance dropped to Gaz Barlow in the box, he managed to get a shot away which forced the keeper into yet another good save. The Auld South keeper pulled off another good save moments later, this time from a Gaz Barlow header.

Turning point ... Auld South score from a corner ...

Goal!

Winteringham were forcing Auld South to work hard, and to be fair to Auld South they did roll up their sleeves and get stuck in and grafted for each other. It was more a case of trying to stop Winteringham scoring, than attacking themselves. The Auld South keeper kept them in the game on numerous occasions pulling off some fine saves, and was the man of the match for Auld South. The game looked destined for a draw then on around 80 minutes, an Auld South player, under no pressure just inside the Winteringham half, punted a hopeful ball into the Winteringham penalty area. There looked to be no danger, but the ball took an awkward bounce and lopped over Mick Scott into the net. Winteringham had a matter of minutes to rescue the game and really pushed Auld South onto the back foot. A chance feel to Lee Moulds inside the box, it was a tight angle, Lee went for goal, unfortunately the shot went high and wide. Auld South managed to defend resolutely for the remainder of the game and were delighted when the final whistle blew.

Credit should be given to Auld South, despite being outplayed for large spells of the game; they never stopped working and weren’t prepared to give in. Winteringham had the chance to put the game beyond Auld South before half time, but didn’t and it’s another lesson to learn. In the big games it’s even more important to put your chances away. Despite all Auld South’s graft and hard work, they barely tested the Winteringham keeper, other than the two goals. And even with the wind in their favour in the second half they never really put Winteringham under any lengthy spells of pressure, which the Winteringham defence and midfield should take credit for. Auld South will now be hoping Winteringham are able to pick themselves up and beat the current league champions, Pepperells. This would give Auld South a chance to be crowned the new champions if they’re able to beat Queen Bess on Sunday.

Despite a large number of the players and staff feeling very dejected after the game, everyone should take some positives out of a very good season. The club has developed substantially over the current season, with the players improving game on game which has set things up very nicely for next season. And with Dec Marshall, Lee Markham and Nathan Kerins all to come back into the 1st team squad, Winteringham look very strong for Season 2009-10.
