10-Man Winteringham see points go South
Winteringham 0 - 2 Auld South Yorkshire
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 1
by Anthony Hubbard
On Sunday March 9th Winteringham FC met Auld South Yorkshire in the League. It was a chance for the young side to gauge themselves against one of the better sides as Auld South sat second in the table. After last weeks fine performance expectations were high before kick off, and looking at the league a win would move Winteringham further up the league.
Winteringham, were playing against the wind in the first half and managed to limit Auld South’s chances to long shots. Auld South had the majority of the play in the first half and Winteringham seemed to lack the spark that had seen them brush aside Winterton Rovers a week earlier. Yet again injured squad members Ian and Matty Durnian and Lee Markham came to offer their support to the team.
Although Auld South had the majority of possession Winteringham never really looked in danger of conceding a goal from open play. Then about 35 minutes into the first half Auld South got a corner, a defensive lapse led to them scoring from the set piece. It was like déjà vu, as Winteringham had lost the previous fixture against Auld South due to naive defending from set plays. It was now time for Winteringham to regroup, dig in and play the rest of the first half out without conceding another goal, as in the second half they would have the benefit of the wind. It had looked as if Winteringham had hung on, then on the stroke of half time another defensive mistake led to Auld South scoring another. The back four look across to the linesman, the response was “he was two yards on side”. Winteringham barely had time to restart the game before the referee blew for half time.

The second half was like a polar opposite to the first with Winteringham having the majority of the ball. Auld South seemed content to sit on their 2 goal lead and their strikers were limited to shots form distance. Winteringham were creating chances but seemed to lack the cutting edge they had shown the previous week. Unfortunately about 15 minutes into the second half centre back Carl Hull had to go off with an injury, this meant a tactical switch needed to be made. Lee Moulds switched to centre back and Keil Leisk joined Jack Cardy upfront. Soon after Anth Hubbard replaced Paul Smith. Then moments later Winteringham lost full back Adam Sparrow, so now not only were they 2 goals down but they were down to 10 men.
Although down to 10 men Winteringham continued to press, they switch to 3-3-3, and forced Auld South onto the defensive. Auld South tried to counter but created very little as the back 3 defended for their lives. Despite numerous chances it just seems as if it wasn’t to be Winteringham’s day. Credit goes to Auld South although Winteringham felt like they had been mugged as they didn’t make Auld South earn their victory as both goals came from mistakes, Auld South were a bit more streetwise in their approach and they made their experience count.
Although beaten on the day there are still positives to take out of the game, although down to 10 men Winteringham competed and matched second in the table and didn’t concede in the second half. There were some good performances on the day notably man of the match David Moulds who battled hard for the full 90 minutes. Lee Moulds again proved what an asset he can be for the team with another gritty performance. Dan Hubbard and Robbie Parker, although both adapting to new positions, put in solid performances.
