Winteringham Barged out of the Cup
Barge Inn 2 - 0 Winteringham
Bob Bedford Cup Quarter Final
by Anthony Hubbard
Winteringham FC suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Barge Inn, which knocked them out of the cup at the quarter final stage. It was a very eventful encounter, with missed chances, shots hitting the wood work and disallowed goals. In the end Tony Simons rapidly developing youngsters failed to adapt to the direct, aggressive and hard tackling style of Barge Inn.
The first chance fell to Robbie Parker after about 8 minutes, he raced through one on one with the keeper, his shot beat the keeper but curled agonisingly wide of the far post. The next chance, two minutes later, fell again to Robbie Parker, who headed past the keeper to score; The Winteringham players celebrated although it was short lived as a very late flag from the linesman ruled out what appeared a perfectly good goal.
After the disallowed goal, it was Barge who seemed to compose themselves more, Winteringham struggled to adapt to the direct aggressive style of Barge and got knocked out of their normally free flowing game. Although Barge didn't create that many clear cut chances in the first half it was them that took the lead on 25 minutes from a corner. There were appeals from the Winteringham players that the goalkeeper had been knocked over, but the referee had none of that and awarded the goal to Barge.
From the restart it was more of the same from Barge, long balls, full blooded tackles and 100% commitment. There was no real flow to the game as it had to be stopped for persistent free kicks. Although Barge looked the more confident and up for the battle, it was Winteringham who had the next clear cut change. It fell to right winger Ant Prior on 41 minutes, who struck the cross bar from just inside the penalty area. The remaining 4 minutes of the first half passed without a chance falling to either side.
After the restart, Barge started as they finished the first half, throwing themselves into every challenge not giving up on any loose balls, and their battling approach lead to the second goal of the game, scored on 50 minutes. The second goal led to Winteringham making a tactical change on 55 minutes. Joshua Hubbard came on to replace left back Adam Sparrow, Josh joined Lee Moulds up front with Robbie Parker switching to right midfield and Ant Prior switching to full back. The change in tactics appeared to have paid off as Lee Moulds raced through on goal on 60 minutes; he rounded the keeper and struck the ball into the empty net. But yet again a very late flag from the linesman ruled the goal out.
The next 10 minutes saw Winteringham continue to press Barge. They created several half chances but nothing to trouble the keeper. On 72 minutes Winteringham coach Wally Grice made his final tactical substitution. Keil Leisk replaced Paul Smith, and Winteringham switched to 4-3-3, with Dan Hubbard switching to centre half to partner Lee Markham, and Carl Hull pushed forward to joined the 3 man midfield. The switch seem to have paid off immediately as some inter play between Robbie Parker and Carl Hull lead to a cross to the far post which Dave Moulds was inches from connecting with. Winteringham carried on pushing forward looking for a way back into the game and after some silky touches from Keil Leisk the ball eventually fell to David Moulds whose shot beat the keeper, hit the inside of the post and bobbled into the arms of the scrambling goalie. Minutes later Robbie Parker crossed from the right into the penalty area, Lee Moulds took the ball on his chest and struck the ball goal bound, unfortunately it was straight at the keeper and he pushed it over the bar. It appeared not to be Winteringham's day, although they continued to press and create a couple of half chances, they didn't trouble the Barge goalkeeper. Barge created very little on the counter, although they did try to push forward on the counter the back four of Ant Prior, Lee Markham, Dan Hubbard and Liam Syron had more than enough to cope with their advances.

On reflection Winteringham had the better chances and created a lot more going forward, and goalkeeper Mick Scott apart from the two goals didn't have a save to make. Having said that Barge Inn wanted it more, they battled for every loose ball, threw themselves into every 50/50 and didn't give up on anything. Barge had a greater belief and played the game to their strengths and never let Winteringham get out of 1st gear. Barge showed a greater will to win and in the end deserved to progress to the semi-finals of the cup. The referee, who had a very good game, awarded the Man of the Match to Robbie Parker, who for his effort and non-stop running didn't deserve to be on the losing side.
