Winteringham Barge Ahead!
Winteringham 3 - 1 Barge Inn (Half-time 2 - 1)
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 1
by Anthony Hubbard
On Sunday 6th April 2008 Winteringham took on Barge Inn in the first division of the Scunthorpe and District Sunday League. It was to be the third meeting of the two clubs, with Barge winning both of the previous matches. For the second week running Manager Tony Simons had a battle to put a team together, as he still had four players out with injury. He managed to put a squad of 13 players together come kick off time. It wasn’t only Winteringham struggling as their opponents were in a similar situation; Barge Inn were only able to muster up 11 players and couldn’t provide a lineman, something they were later to regret!
The game kicked off at 3pm in bright sunshine, it was Winteringham kicking into the sun in the first half, and this made it very difficult for the defenders to cope with Barge’s long ball game in the early stages. It was Barge who were to take the lead about 10 minutes into the game, when a long ball led to a mix up in the defence and the Barge striker was able to bundle the ball into the net. The goal seemed to wake the Winteringham players up, as soon after they created a very good chance. Dave Moulds can feel very unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty when the Barge Defender tried to hack him down as he raced through on goal. To Dave’s credit he stayed on his feet and tried to get a shot on goal, in retrospect he maybe should have gone down.
Winteringham continued piling the pressure onto Barge; they were now playing their fluent passing game, and passing the ball around the Barge players. It was this approach that led to the equaliser. It was scored by new boy Craig Lindsey, who has now scored in two consecutive games. The Barge defenders were claiming offside, the referee stated as there is no linesman he can only use his best judgement, and he judged the goal to be onside. After the restart Winteringham carried on passing the ball around, letting the ball do the work sensing that a victory was within their grasp.
Winteringham took the lead from a corner swung in by Rob Waston; Dave Moulds met the cross and was able to beat the keeper. Winteringham went in at half time winning 2-1. It was no more than the Winteringham players deserved as they had been by far the better side in the first half.
Winteringham started the second half the way they ended the first, passing their way around the Barge players. A quick one-two between Rory Cunningham and Craig Lindsey enable Craig to cross the ball into the box, Dave Moulds struck the ball past the keeper to score the third goal. Again the Barge players were claiming off side, they were greeted with the same response from the referee. This led to the Barge players becoming more and more frustrated and several players were booked for dissent. Moments latter Liam Syron went on a darting run, he beat two players to then be hacked down by a two footed lunge as he approached the penalty area. The referee wasted no time in issuing a red card to the Barge defender.
Barge Inn never looked likely to cause Winteringham any problems in the second half, which must have been a relief to goalkeeper Rick Watson after his heroics the previous week. Winteringham continued to create chances, with Ant Prior hitting the post, Liam Syron having several shots from distance. It looked like Winteringham were going to extend their lead when the ball fell to Carl Hull in the six yard box, goodness only knows how the ball ended up going over the bar. All in all despite a very shaky start it was a good solid performance from the Winteringham players, who got back to playing to their strengths and stopped Barge from dictating the game to them.
Dave Moulds as well as being given the captain's arm band for the day was given the Man of Match award. He led by example and worked tirelessly for the full ninety minutes. There were some other good performances, Ant Prior had a very good game linking well with Liam Syron down the right hand side, which caused Barge problems all game. Craig Lindsey and Mark Grimbleby playing their second games for the club looked to be finding their touch. Winteringham now need to take this form into the next game, as they will meet a team looking for revenge, as they play local rivals Winterton.
The next game: Winterton 13th April 2008 at Winterton Playing Fields - off Newport Drive 10:30am kick off.
