by Anthony Hubbard
Winteringham Goalscorer: Karl Hull Winteringham Man of the Match: Karl Hull
Late Smash and Grab – Again!! For the second time in a matter of weeks Winteringham paid the price for not putting the game to bed when they were on top. They dominated the game in the first half, but failed to put the game to bed, and got caught by a late sucker punch. Winteringham started very brightly, and pressured Beauty all over the pitch standing up to their Beauty bully boy tactics. Winteringham took a deserved lead after 15 minutes. Captain Karl Hull skipped pass two players and drove the ball into the top corner of the net. It was no more than Winteringham deserved. Winteringham continued to press and were creating some good chances but unfortunately were unable to really test the keeper. Keil Leisk hit bar, and Paul Smith put a header just wide just before half time. The Winteringham defence was solid throughout the first half and limited Beauty to shots from distance, which keeper Ian Berridge was more than capable of dealing with. After the restart, Winteringham carried on where they had left off, solid at the back and pressing in midfield. Beauty got a lucky break when a mix up in defence, three playing offside and one dropping off, led to the Beauty striker racing clear. Ian Berridge raced off his line to narrow the angle, but the Beauty striker coolly lobbed the keeper to draw the team’s level. Beauty upped their game after the equaliser, but were still restricted to shots from distance by a very resolute defence. Winteringham had a number of chances at the other end to regain the lead, but failed to find the killer touch. The game looked destined for a draw, but in the final minute a debatable offside decision went Beauty’s way and the striker raced clear and calmly slotted the ball into the near corner of the net. It was a real smash and grab, Winteringham were the better side for the majority of the game, but once again failed to put their chances away. Beauty showed a good fighting spirit, which sometimes crossed the line, to come back from a goal down and win a game that should have been put beyond them. Winteringham should take heart from the performance as it was probably as good as they have played all season. The Beauty victory puts them on course for the league title. Defeat for Winteringham sees them remain in fourth place.
