Man of the Match

Winteringham Reserves lined up against Bottesford Town Reserves for the second time this season, with yet again a much changed side. After a scrappy opening period both sides settled down and created chances, Lee Markham playing in goal made a fine save to deny the home side after 20 minutes but the best early chance fell to Dom Bowdler as he raced clear of the home defence to be faced one on one with the keeper.  Unfortunately he lacked composure and his weak effort was easily saved. Both sides continued to probe but it was no surprise to see the home side take the lead with the best move of the half, there seemed little danger when the Bottesford left full back picked the ball up in his own half, but after beating 2 challenges and getting to the dead ball line he produced a good cross which was tapped home by his grateful team mate. Manager Ian Brown was forced into the games first substitution when the injured Liam Syron was replaced with Josh Hubbard.

The second half began with Winteringham looking a bit brighter, forcing the home keeper into a couple of early saves and winning 3 quick corners. Unfortunately they were unable to break through and as the home side pushed forward the Winteringham defence were outpaced which resulted in the referee awarding a dubious penalty after the striker made the most of the challenge, Lee Markham was very unlucky as he saved the spot kick only to be beaten by the strikers follow up. A double substitution was made with Stewart Goulay replacing the injured Stuart Whittam and Matty Graves replacing Phil Denham Shortly after this the away side got back in the game when good work on the right by Dom Bowdler led to Josh Hubbard firing in from close range, all of a sudden there was a bit more bite from the away side, this however did not last as in the last 15 minutes the home team scored 2 more goals on the counter attack.  The pace of the home team’s striker was just too much for the Winteringham defence. The final score was a disappointing 4-1 defeat and a very lacklustre display to make matters worse Winteringham picked up 3 yellow cards from a more than fussy referee.  Man of the match was Sean Stevenson. Special mention should go to Lee Markham who answered a very late SOS and played very well in goal. If Winteringham are to achieve anything this year it is imperative that they put a settled side out week in week out, otherwise I am afraid it is going to be a very long season. Next up is the Bob Bedford Cup game on the 20th of December - a must win game!
