Winteringham 5 v 1 Brigg Servicemen
 (Half time: 3-0)
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 1

by Anthony Hubbard

Goals: Gareth Barlow 4, Adam Sparrow (penalty)
MOTM: Josh Hubbard

Winteringham took on newly promoted Brigg Servicemen in their 3rd league game of the current campaign. Brigg proved to be a well organised side and were difficult to break down in the early stages. Gareth Barlow managed to break the deadlock when Nathan Kerins won the ball just inside the Brigg half; he drove at the defence then picked out Gaz’s run.

Gaz raced through and placed the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The goal led to a little bit of complacency in the Winteringham defence as Brigg got the chance to equalize soon after the goal. The striker beat the offside trap and raced goalwards, luckily keeper Rick Watson was quick off his line and smothered the ball at the striker’s feet. It was a wake up call for the defence, which sharpened up its act after that.

Brigg were well up for the battle and midfield duo Dec Marshall and Josh Hubbard had to be on top of their game to match them in the middle of the park. Gareth Barlow doubled Winteringham's lead when he coolly guided Adam Sparrow’s cross into the bottom corner of the net. Winteringham were having a lot of possession but were trying to force the game a little, which led to a number of misplaced and over-hit passes. Undeterred Winteringham stuck at their task and Gareth Barlow managed to complete his hat-trick just before half time. After losing the ball Robbie Parker won it back and played the ball through to Gaz, he kept his cool and placed the ball past the keeper into the net. The half time whistle was blown shortly afterwards.

After the restart Winteringham were playing against the wind, this didn’t stop them continuing to dominate possession. Nathan Kerins and Adam Sparrow were working well together down the left hand side and constantly caused Brigg problems. This good work led to Winteringham being awarded a penalty. A quick one-two led to Adam being one on one with the keeper, Adam looked to have picked out the corner, but the keeper made a fine save. The save dropped to Nathan Kerins, he looked to have scored but his shot was handled on the line by the Brigg defender. A penalty was awarded. Adam Sparrow stepped up and drove the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal. Soon after the goal Robbie Parker had to leave the field with a head injury, he was replaced by teenager Connor Sturman. Despite being four goals down Brigg didn’t let their heads dropped and continued looking to pressure Winteringham’s back four. The back four played well and made some very good challenges and vital interceptions.

Winteringham keeper Rick Watson pulled off a fine save midway through the second half from a shot just inside the penalty area.

Gareth Barlow extended Winteringham’s lead further; he received the ball on the edge of the Brigg penalty area, drove past two defenders and placed the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the goal. Soon after the goal centre back Dan Hubbard made a vital block on the edge of his own penalty area, he showed true bravery facing two on rushing attackers he made sure he was first to the ball and managed to clear. Brigg managed to get a consolation goal just before the end. They were awarded a free kick just inside their own half. They drove the ball into the Winteringham penalty area, the defence appeared to have switched off which let in the Brigg attacker who played the ball under the diving keeper. Dan Hubbard was replaced after the goal by David Moulds as he had picked up a slight knock during one of his vital challenges. The final whistle blew shortly afterwards.

It was a fine team performance with some very good individual performances, suck as Josh Hubbard, Dec Marshall and Adam Sparrow but it was truly a team performance with everyone playing their part in the victory. Next up it’s Duff Dynamos in the Challenge Cup.
