Broughton Town 9 v 0 Winteringham FC Reserves (Half time: 5 - 0) Scunthorpe Sunday League Bob Bedford Cup Round 1
by Anthony Hubbard
Winteringham Man of the Match: Ian Berridge
Winteringham Reserves came up against Broughton Town in the Bob Bedford Cup. Broughton are a 1st Division side and are a team of much better players than Winteringham Reserves, having said that Winteringham more than held there own for the first 20 minutes. They defended as a unit, and limited Broughton to shots from distance. On about 20 minutes the turning point came, John Underwood picked up a foot injury and left the field of play. The team was left with no time to reorganise and no sub was ready to come on, as a number of players failed to turn up for the game Ian Brown was left to run the line, manage the team and be the only sub. Broughton made the most of the disruption and scored two quick goals. Three more goals came before half time.
The second half saw Winteringham battle and give everything they had, unfortunately they were playing a much better team that was able to pick them off and Broughton added four more goals in the second half. The Winteringham players should take pride in their performance, although the result doesn’t look good on paper the performance was more than admirable. The players who had the bottle to turn up to pit their wits against a much better side should take credit.
