Broughton Town 1 v 7 Winteringham FC
 (Half time: 1 - 3)
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division One

by Anthony Hubbard

Winteringham Goalscorers: Nathan Kerins 3, Robbie Parker, Dave Moulds, Gareth Barlow
Winteringham Man of the Match: Nathan Kerins

On Sunday 26th April Winteringham FC took on Broughton Town on Broughton playing fields. Winteringham were 5 points ahead of Broughton prior to kick off, but Broughton had two games in hand, so Winteringham couldn't afford to slip up. Winteringham started the game well, some slick passing and good movement off the ball, caused Broughton problems from the off. It took Winteringham less than 10 minutes to break the deadlock. Liam Syron attacked down the left, crossed into the box, Nathan Kerins was on hand to head the cross past the Broughton keeper. Winteringham doubled their lead soon after. John Cunningham fizzed the ball into Kerins, Kerins controlled, turned and threaded the ball through for Robbie Parker. Robbie latched onto the pass and stroked the ball with his left foot past the keeper into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

A chance came Broughton’s way from a corner swung in from the left, there was a mix up in the Winteringham defence and a Broughton player headed goalwards, Luckily Mick Scott was on hand to tip the effort over the bar. Moments later Winteringham extended their lead. James Tune attacked down the left, crossed into the box, Striker Dom Bowdler had a simple tap in to claim his 7th goal of the season. It was looking like Winteringham were going to go into half time with a 3 goal lead. But a lack of concentration from a disputed free kick awarded to Broughton, lead to Broughton's number 4 being unmarked on the edge of the Winteringham box. He swung his left foot at the ball, he mis-hit the shot, but luckily for him it looped over the keeper into the back of the net. Broughton had their tails up, but the half time whistle blew shortly after.

Winteringham started the second half in the same way they started the first, playing at a high tempo with quick inter changing passing. Despite Winteringham having large chunks of possession it took around 10 minutes before they created another clear cut chance. It came when full back Lee Markham crossed into the box, Dave Moulds rose above the Broughton defence and headed past the Broughton keeper. Winteringham made a number of substitutes after the fourth goal, on came Ryan Markham, Ant Prior and Gaz Barlow, off went Dave Moulds, John Cunningham and Dom Bowdler. The next chance fell to Dan Hubbard, he found the ball at his feet around 25 yards from goal, unfortunately his strike went wide of the target. Moments later Gaz Barlow saw a header from the edge of the area bounce just wide of the left hand upright. Winteringham did extend their lead soon after. Dan Hubbard threaded a ball through which Gaz Barlow latched onto and then simply passed the ball past the keeper into the left hand corner of the net. Barlow turned provider moments later when he sprinted down the left, leaving two Broughton players for dead, he squared the ball to the unmarked Nathan Kerins who sided footed the ball past the keeper into the goal. Soon after Winteringham’s 6th goal, Gaz Barlow drove into the Broughton penalty area beating two players with ease, with Kerins on a hat-trick, Gaz unselfishly squared the ball to him. Kerins made sure of the goal by smashing the ball into the top left hand corner of the net, which completed a deserved hat-trick. There was little further action of note before the final whistle blew. A mention should go to Referee M Goodhand who refereed the game superbly, but unfortunately for the Sunday League is considering hanging up his whistle, this could have been his last game as a referee, here's hoping it isn't as the league will have lost one of the better referee's in my opinion if he does give it up.

Winteringham played very well for the majority of the game, the only negative was the Broughton goal which came from players switching off, but other than that it was a good all round team performance. The defence was as solid as ever and keeper Mick Scott was limited to having to make a handful of saves at best. Nathan Kerins was awarded man of the match, and did work his socks off for the full 90 minutes. Young James Tune had another good game. Regular full back Lee Markham had a superb game, but unfortunately it will be his last this season as he goes into hospital for an operation on Thursday, all at Winteringham FC wish Lee well and hope for a speedy recovery.
