David Moulds - Man of the Match ... again!
Winteringham dominate but Broughton score ...
Winteringham 0 - 3 Broughton Town (Half-time 0 - 0)
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 1
by Anthony Hubbard
On a very windy Sunday afternoon Winteringham took on Broughton Town, the previous meeting had seen Winteringham come from 3 goals down to win 4-3. Unfortunately there was to be no repeat of that performance. Winteringham won the toss and decided to kick into the wind in the first half.
Despite playing against the wind Winteringham had a superb first 45 minutes, they controlled the majority of play. Although Keeper Rick Watson made some fantastic punches from corner kicks he never had a save to make in the first half. It was Winteringham who had the better of the chances with Liam Syron hitting the post, Alan Ingledew being agonisingly close to latching onto several Lee Moulds crosses. Lee Moulds also had some chances himself, forcing the keeper into a save with one and just striking wide of the post with another. As the half time whistle blew the Winteringham players should have been very pleased with their performance as they had controlled the game in the first 45 minutes.
Winteringham had the benefit of the wind in the second half but for some reason seemed to struggle to take full advantage of it. Winteringham continued to create chances but weren’t controlling the game as they did in the first half. It was as though the players had started to lose confidence in each others ability and rather than continue to play the ball on the floor they began to play more of a long ball game, which didn’t suit them. In the whole of the second half Broughton had three shots at goal and unfortunately all of those shots went in. Winteringham still created more chances but were unable to capitalise on the chances they created and on reflection their inexperience cost them.
Late into the second half full back Adam Sparrow went into a 50/50 which he won, the referee blew for a foul and to everyone’s amazement issued Adam with a straight red card. His reason after the game was that it was a two footed challenge, but both sets of players were in agreement that it was a harsh decision. Credit to Broughton although played off the park for big spells of the game they used their experience to win a game they really had no right to.
It was another harsh lesson for the young team to learn, but they shouldn’t be too downbeat as they had played some very good football and were just unfortunate they couldn’t find the cutting edge that had seen them put five pass Winterton Rovers.
The next game is against Pepperells, Winteringham need to get back to winning ways as soon as possible to avoid getting dragged into a relegation dog fight.
