Winteringham took on local rivals Burton in the third round of the challenge cup. Winteringham needed to bounce back after suffering their first defeat of the season the week before, and although they struggled to get going in the first half they ended up coming out comfortable winners. Burton were really up for the battle in the first half and possibly showed a little more fight, having said that it was Winteringham who had the majority of the ball. Despite having the majority of the play Winteringham were unable to take the lead, either be it by a lack of quality in the final third or some very good defending by Burton. The first real chance fell to Nathan Kerins. The ball was swung in from the left and Nathan headed over from close range. The next chance fell to Gareth Barlow whose shot was parried over by the Burton keeper. Gareth did add to his ever increasing tally moments later though. He picked up the ball on the edge of the area, nutmegged defender Jason Stephenson, before placing the ball past the on rushing keeper. On the balance of play Winteringham would feel they deserved their lead, although Burton had battled hard for each other and defended well up to that point. Burton managed to drag themselves back into the tie when their striker McCray pounced on a mix up in the Winteringham back four. McCray wasted no time in clinically placing the ball past keeper Rick Watson. The sides went into the half time interval level; Winteringham would feel that on the balance of play they should have been leading, whereas Burton would feel they deserved to be level as a result of their hard work. Winteringham restarted the game and nearly got caught straight from the kick off, but fortunately Ady Brocklesby managed to scramble the ball clear after some very suspect defending. Winteringham regained the lead with their first attack of the second half. Gavin Hale took a throw in from the left hand side. He launched it into the box, Dave Moulds flicked it on at the near post and Gareth Barlow was waiting at the back post for a simple header. Winteringham put Burton under a lot of pressure after the goal; Gavin Hale had a goal ruled out for offside. Winteringham nearly got caught on the counter when Rory Cunningham smashed a shot from 30 yards; it went inches wide of the right hand up right. Gareth Barlow completed his hattrick when he latched on to a superb touch from Nathan Kerins, Gaz simply placed the ball past the keeper. Gareth was replaced by Lee Moulds soon after completing his hattrick. Lee had an immediate impact, causing uncertainty in the Burton defence with his power and pace. Winteringham added a fourth when Lee Moulds powered past the Burton defence and when faced with the keeper one on one, he coolly played in Nathan Kerins for a simple tap in from around penalty spot. It was a very unselfish piece of play from Lee which helped cement Winteringham’s dominance in the second half. Lee almost scored himself moments later when he shot from just inside the penalty area, his shot beat the keeper but came back off the post. Adam Sparrow was the next player to try his luck and he forced the keeper into a good save with a shot from 25 yards. Gavin Hale rounded off the scoring when he powered through the heart of the Burton defence and picked out the bottom corner with his right foot. Lee Moulds had a goal disallowed in the dying moments when he was adjudged to have fouled the keeper. It was good response from Winteringham, despite not playing their best they had more than enough to beat a hardworking Burton side and came out worthy winners. There were some good performances which included Connor Sturman who worked tirelessly for the full 90 minutes. David Moulds and Gavin Hale dominated the midfield for the majority of the game. Gareth Barlow and Josh Hubbard worked hard up top, with Gaz finding his goal scoring touch to take his season's tally to 21. Next up it’s a return to the County Cup with Real Ropery of Gainsborough visiting Winteringham on 6th December 2009, it will be a 1:30 kick off.
