Winteringham come roaring back ...
Winteringham 4 - 4 Cormeilles (Half-time 0 - 1)
French Tour 2008
After week’s of almost unbroken sunshine, the rain started at Lieurey’s Stadium, just as the players kicked off, and by half-time there was a steady downpour.
Winteringham fielded a mixture of players from both the first and second teams, whilst Cormeilles fielded a very young and fit side. The opening exchanges were even with both sides probing for an opening, but each side had a strong defence for 30 minutes and chances for a shot on goal were at a premium. However, after 30 minutes a defensive mix up saw the ball squirm loose to a waiting French forward who had the simplest of tap-ins to open the scoring.
As the rain continued to drive, Cormeilles looked to increase their lead but a resolute Winteringham defence with 19-year-old Carl Hull a commanding presence, held firm until half-time. A Robbie Parker goal was ruled out for an infringement leading up to the ‘goal’.
Shortly after the break Cormeilles seemed to have taken the game by the scruff of the neck when they added a second, but instead of dropping their heads, Winteringham roarded back with a David Moulds header, shortly followed by David Bramhall notching a great equaliser. Winteringham were now rampant, and Robbie Parker hit a deserved third to the delight of the travelling fans, and within minutes David Moulds notched his second and the team’s fourth.
Cormeilles scored a scrappy third, and then Carl Hull was involved in a collision with one of his own players and had to limp off the pitch. The reorganised Winteringham side appeared to have held out for a well deserved victory, as the minutes of added time grew and grew. With the very last kick of the game, Cormeilles scored the eighth goal of the game to bring a creditable draw to both sides.
