Winteringham took on Crowle United in a very early season fixture. It was possibly the first time in the clubs history it had been forced to play a league fixture in August. Both sides were missing players, either due to holidays or work commitments. Three players had failed to turn up for Winteringham, which left them scratching round for a side moments before they were due to kick off.
Winteringham started the game very brightly and had Crowle on the back foot for long periods. Josh Hubbard went close to breaking the deadlock when he latched onto Lee Moulds’ cross, but the shot went just wide of the far post. Winteringham thought they had taken the lead moments later, but a lineman’s flag ruled the goal out. Winteringham were awarded a penalty which was taken by Lee Moulds. Unfortunately Lee put the kick just wide of the post. As luck would have it and totally against the run of play, a defensive slip up at the other end let in Crowle for a simple goal to take the lead.
Winteringham continued to dominate and it wasn’t long before Olly Bradbury found the back of the net. Yet again a very late linesman’s flag ruled the goal out.
Winteringham dominated the second just as they had the first. Lee Moulds struck the side netting early on in the half. There was a shout for a second penalty, the protests were waved away by the referee. Both sides started to show signs of fatigue towards the end of the second, which was probably to be expected playing so early in the year. In the dying minute of the game, Winteringham threw everyone forward looking for an equaliser. This left them open to the counter attack, and Crowle added a second late on.
It was a good performance by Winteringham who were vey unlucky to not get a point or even all three on the basis of play, but football can be a cruel game at times.
