Winteringham Reserves played Crown Inn on a very windy Sunday morning at the playing fields on Holme Lane, Messingham. The wind played a major part in the quality of the game, as it was blowing across the pitch it made it very difficult to play attractive football. The first half was a battle for the Winteringham players although not playing at their best they managed to restrict Crown to limited chances - the majority being from distance. Winteringham created several chances of their own but were unable to test the keeper. Although Winteringham were finding it hard to recapture the form of several weeks ago, it appeared they were going to go into the half time interval level, but a freak goal led to Crown taking the lead minutes from half time.
The Winteringham players re-grouped during the half time interval and approached the second half with some optimism. In the early stages Winteringham appeared to have found a bit of form and started to look dangerous going forward, but a defensive lapse led to Crown scoring a second. The Winteringham players rallied and tried to find a way back into the game but as they pushed forward they got caught on the break again and Crown scored a third. The third goal was a big turning point as it was at this point a lot of Winteringham player’s heads dropped and from this moment on there was only ever going to be one winner.
Despite Paul Mitchell making some very good saves Winteringham ended up conceding seven goals. The level of defeat was more to do with the mentality of the Winteringham players as a lot of them gave up far too easily. There were some positives to take form the game, Luke McMahon battled well despite trying to adapt to a new position. Josh Hubbard put in another battling performance but unfortunately had to go off injured. Substitute Dave Bramhall played very well when he came on midway through the second half. The attention now turns to Duff Dynamos away next Sunday, as it is a massive game - a defeat for either side could see them edge closer to a relegation battle with Queens.
