Winteringham Reserves took on District Rangers at Broughton playing fields. With Scunthorpe United playing in a cup final, Winteringham were forced into fielding a makeshift side. Winteringham struggled to find any real flow in the early stages and the game lacked any quality. Winteringham did take an early lead however; Wally Grice earned a free kick down the left hand side. Anth Hubbard swung the free kick into the box, the defence were unable to deal with the cross and Dom Bowdler was on hand to put the ball past the keeper. Moments later Wally Grice earned a corner through more good work down the left. Anth Hubbard swung the corner into the far corner of the goal, a defender made an attempt to clear the ball but it had already crossed the line. Winteringham extended their lead further moments later. Dick Martin found himself in space just inside the District half, he crossed the ball into the box, the District keeper tried to claim the ball but could only help the ball into the back of the net. Two almost identical goals followed. Mark Bennett flicking on Paul Mitchell's goal kicks, Dom Bowdler latching on to the flick and coolly placing the ball past the on rushing keeper. It completed yet another hat-trick for Dom. After the half time interval Winteringham scored almost immediately. Dom Bowdler threaded the ball through for Phil Denham; he calmly lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the goal. Winteringham’s lead was extended further moments later; a cross into the box was turned into the back of the net by a District defender. District managed to pull a goal back; the striker beat the offside trap and coolly passed the ball into the bottom corner of the goal. District doubled their score soon after the restart, an unmarked midfield player, drove the ball goalwards, the ball somehow found its way into the back of the net. Winteringham stepped up their game after the restart. Dick Martin found himself in space down the right; he drove the ball across the face of the goal, and a touch from a retreating defender put the ball past the keeper. Moments later Winteringham were awarded a penalty. Dick Martin stepped up and drove the ball into the left hand side of the net. Winteringham saved the best goal until last. Paul Mitchell played a short goal kick to Anth Hubbard, he passed the ball to Lee Moulds. Lee Moulds drove down the left beating two players, he then squared the ball to Phil Denham, who simply placed the ball into the back of the net for Winteringham’s tenth goal. It was a good three points for Winteringham despite not being one of their better performances. They struggled to find the recent good form, but did manage to take their chances which led to a flattering score line and three more points which may lead to them claiming a promotion place. Winteringham have one remaining game which is against Newlands and is yet to be rearranged.
