DSV 1 v 2 Winteringham (Half time: 0-0) Scunthorpe Sunday League Bob Bedford Cup Rd 2
by Anth Hubbard
Goals: Sean Stevenson 2 MOTM: Dave Burton
Winteringham took on division 3 side DSV in round two of the Bob Bedford Cup. It was Winteringham Reserves first game in 6 weeks and it showed both in technique and fitness levels. The game was very scrappy with neither side getting hold of it and dominating for long periods. Winteringham had the better of the play in the early stages and created a number of very good chances. Both Stu Whittam and Ben Griffiths were posing a threat on either wing and Sean Stevenson’s pace caused the DSV defence problems. As the first half wore on Winteringham’s energy levels began to dwindle and DSV began to get more of the ball and hit Winteringham on the counter. DSV had a very good chance to take the lead just before half time. They hit Winteringham on the break and with players not tracking runners the DSV attacker found himself in the box unmarked, fortunately for Winteringham his shot well wide. Winteringham began the second half very poorly and invited pressure onto the back four. After a 5 minute spell of poor play Winteringham picked up their game and began to push DSV back. Sean Stevenson scored a quick brace to put Winteringham into a deserved two goal lead. The first came from a mammoth kick from keeper Matthew Collingwood, the DSV defender misjudged the kick and Sean pounced on the loose ball and passed the ball past the keeper into the net. The second came when Sean found himself unmarked in the box, he coolly place the ball past the DSV keeper. DSV grab a life line with 10 minutes remaining. The goal came from a throw in, again runners weren’t tracked and a mis-kick in defence allowed the attacker clean through on goal, it was a very good finish leaving the keeper no chance. The goal gave DSV a lift and they pushed forward for the remainder of the game, but Winteringham managed to defend their lead and book their place in the third round against Lincoln Castle. It was nice for Winteringham to start the New Year with a win and over the 90 minutes it was a well deserved victory.
Winteringham now have a long run of games and hopefully this victory can spark a bit of life into their season.
