Winteringham lose by odd goal in five
Winteringham Reserves 2 - 3 Duffs Dynamos
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 4
by Anthony Hubbard
On a sunny but slightly windy day, Winteringham Reserves took on fellow strugglers Duff Dynamos. The previous meeting had seen Winteringham comfortably beat Duffs three goals to one. With things tight at the bottom of the table a win was vital for both teams, this fact led to the game being a very scrappy affair.
Winteringham took the lead through Sean Stevenson as he latched onto a through ball and calmly beat the keeper with a right footed strike. Duffs Dynamos got a corner soon after the restart which led to the equaliser. The majority of the game was end to end stuff with chances falling to both sides, but I have to say when Duffs took the lead it was deserved. They were more accurate with their shooting, forcing Winteringham keeper Paul Mitchell into some very good saves.
After the half time interval, Winteringham upped their game slightly and created some more good chances, unfortunately the finishing wasn’t up to the same standard as the build up play. Youngster Ben Griffiths forced the keeper into a very good save with a strike from the edge of the area. Winteringham continued to push forward without really testing the keeper. On 80 minutes a mistake in midfield led to Duff Dynamos breaking through and scoring a third goal.
Encouraged by manager Ian Brown Winteringham continued to push forward, and on 85 minutes Simon Sanderson curled the ball into the far right hand corner from around 25 yards. The game now looked to be turning Winteringham’s way and moments later Ben Barker had an effort cleared off the line.
When the final whistle blew it must be said Duffs Dynamos were worthy winners on the day. Although Winteringham may look at missed chances, they lacked the togetherness and team spirit shown by their opponents. This leaves Winteringham requiring a minimum of two points from the remaining two games to avoid relegation. Next up its DSV and then its fellow strugglers Queens on the final day of the season.
