Winteringham Reserves were drawn against EJ Galaxy in the first round of the divisional cup. Winteringham started determined and show a work ethic that has been missing in previous weeks. Winteringham were being pushed back for long spells of the first half but defended resolutely. EJ Galaxy took the lead with a shot from distance. After the goal Winteringham began to push forward themselves and soon found an equaliser. Stu Whittam drove a free kick into the box, there was a little scramble before the ball fell to Mark Bennett, and he smashed the ball into the net from close range. It got better for Winteringham moments later when Sean Stevenson caused uncertainty in the Galaxy defence and scored a second from just inside the penalty area.  Winteringham went into the half time interval with a well deserved lead.

After the restart EJ galaxy came out with all guns blazing, Winteringham were defending well in the early stages. But the pressure soon paid off when the defence got over run and the Galaxy striker scored from close range. Galaxy scored another moments later from a similar situation, Galaxy pushed men forward and the midfield as a unit failed to offer the defence the support it needed, the defence got pulled all over. The ball fell to the Galaxy striker unmarked in the box, it was another good finish from the Galaxy striker. After going behind for the second time Winteringham dug in again and began fighting as a team. Matthew Collingwood pulled off a string of fantastic saves, Ryan Markham made some fine tackles in the heart of the defence. Winteringham created a number of chances at the other end, with a little bit more composure or a little bit of luck could have equalised for the second time. As Winteringham pushed forward they got caught out at the back and Galaxy extended their lead with a well worked goal. Galaxy added a fifth before the final whistle was blown.

On reflection EJ galaxy were well worth the win, Winteringham possibly shaded the first half when they showed more fight than Galaxy, but Galaxy were much the better team in the second half. It was a spirited performance by the Reserves and if they can produce that amount of effort and determination week in week out they will win more games than they lose. There were some good performances none more so than Ryan Markham and Matthew Collingwood. Next up it’s a return to the league with a local derby against Appleby Wanderers.
