FC Friendship 0 v 2 Winteringham (Half time: 0-1) Lincolnshire Sunday Cup
by Anthony Hubbard
Goals: Nathan Kerins, Robbie Parker MOTM: Ady Brocklesby
Winteringham took on FC Friendship in the last 32 of the Lincolnshire County Sunday Cup. In FC Friendship Winteringham were up against a side that has won the competition in recent years and are normally odds on to make it to at least the quarter final stages, they are a very physical and well organised outfit.
The weather was far from ideal, it was pouring with rain and blowing a gale. Winteringham were playing up hill and into the wind in the first half. The opening stages were very scrappy. Luckily Nathan Kerins took advantage of some uncertainty in the Friendship back four. Nathan beat a defender and drove a cross into the box from wide on the left, he got it slightly wrong but luckily it caught the keeper off guard and flew into the back of the net to put Winteringham into an early lead. It was backs to the wall for long spells of the first half for Winteringham with Friendship trying to make the most of the wind and sloped pitch. Friendship did apply a lot of pressure but didn’t really create any clear cut chances. They looked very dangerous from set plays and with the aid of the wind they nearly scored direct from a corner, but it ended up blowing wide of the far post. Winteringham defended well as a team despite a few players playing below their usual standard. It wasn’t all defending as Gareth Barlow was posing a threat going the other way, but was unable to capitalise on a number of half chances. Winteringham went into the half time interval leading by a goal to nil. After the restart FC Friendship came out intent on fighting their way back into the game. The wind did die down a little as the half wore on, but still Winteringham seemed to overrun the ball a lot when going forward. Friendship were very physical all over the park and were winning the majority of the first balls in the centre of the park. David and Gavin were relying on trying to win the second ball to break up the play, which they did to great effect at times. Winteringham continued to defend well as a team, and were looking to hit Friendship on the counter attack. Nathan Kerins and Dan Hubbard tested the keeper from distance, but the Friendship keeper was more than capable of dealing with their attempts. Winteringham were awarded a free kick around 30 yards from goal when Gavin Hale was hacked down. Josh Hubbard stepped up and smashed the ball goal bound, the Friendship keeper got behind the shot and saved it comfortably. Winteringham did extend their lead and put the game beyond Friendship’s reach in the 80th minute. It was the first time Winteringham got the ball down and played football. There was some good interplay between Nathan Kerins, Josh Hubbard and Gareth Barlow. Gareth Barlow crossed the ball across the face of the goal to Robbie Parker, and Robbie wasted no time in blasting the ball into the empty net from inside the 6 yard box. Winteringham saw out the remainder of the game with little incident. It was a superb victory for the club, Winteringham didn’t play at their best and a number of players did under perform, but as a team they got the job done against a well establish side that battled for the full 90 odd minutes. It was a very scrappy game but Winteringham’s young players showed they were more than capable of dealing with the physical nature of FC Friendship. The one time Winteringham did manage to get the ball down and play they carved FC Friendship open, but with the weather conditions as they were it was more about percentage football.
Ady Brocklesby who was awarded man of the match, did a superb job of marshalling the troops and ensuring Winteringham kept an all important clean sheet. It was more about the team’s performance than how individuals performed on the day, as a team Winteringham did well and progress to the last 16.
The draw for the next round of the County Cup takes place tomorrow, as soon as the fixtures are announced it will appear on this website. Next up its back to the league with and away trip to White Hart of Crowle.
