FTE Burton 2 v 2 Winteringham
 (Half time: 1-1)
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division One

by Anthony Hubbard

Goals: Gareth Barlow (2)
MOTM: Lee Markham

Winteringham attempted to get over their County Cup hangover with a local derby fixture against Burton. Winteringham had to call on their squad with a number of players out with injuries. Burton came into the game on the back of a good victory over Bottesford and knew a win would move them up into fourth.

Winteringham came flying out of the traps and broke the deadlock within minutes. Gareth Barlow attacked down the left and beat the keeper at his near post. After the goal Burton picked themselves up and started to scrap for every ball. Winteringham had the majority of the ball and looked the more dangerous, but Burton always looked a threat on the counter. Dom Bowdler thought he had extended Winteringham’s lead when he blasted a shot form 25 yards, his shot beat the keeper all ends up, but unfortunately it hit the bar and rebounded clear.

Moments later Burton were awarded a soft free kick on the edge of the Winteringham penalty area. The free kick beat the wall and was misjudged by the keeper to level the scoring.

Dom Bowdler hit the woodwork for a second time just before half time. He pounced onto a knock down from Nathan Kerins and volleyed the ball goalwards, it hit the bar and bounced into the keeper’s grasp.

Burton were awarded another soft free kick at the start of the second half. This time the Burton player made no mistake as he picked out the top corner leaving the keeper no chance.

Burton had over 40 minutes to hang onto what would be a good victory for them. Winteringham piled on the pressure and had Burton penned into their half for long periods. Some good interplay between Nathan Kerins and Gareth Barlow led to Gareth equalising. He coolly passed the ball past the keeper from just inside the penalty area.

Gareth looked set to give Winteringham the lead when he sprinted from his own half, beat the Burton defence and passed the ball under the Burton keeper, unfortunately the shot went agonisingly wide of the far post.

Another chance fell Barlow’s way moments later when John Cunningham whipped in a ball from the right flank, unfortunately Barlow was unable to get on the end of the cross. Winteringham had the majority of the possession and looked the more likely side to score, but Burton did have a couple of counter attacks but were unable to test the keeper. In the dying minutes John Cunningham whipped in a free kick from the right hand touch line, but yet again nobody was able to get on the end of it.

Winteringham will feel they deserved more than a point with all their possession, but they were unable to breach a resolute Burton defence who were determined to hang on for a draw. The result leaves Winteringham way off the pace in the league, results will need to drastically improve if they are to improve on last season’s third position. Next up it’s a return to the cup with a quarter final tie against Pepperells. Both teams will be looking for a positive result after suffering recent defeats to Jubilee Inn in the County Cup.
