Winteringham FC 3 v 1 HTE Burton
 (Half time: 2 - 0)
Bob Bedford Cup - Round 3

by Anthony Hubbard

Winteringham Goalscorers: Lee Markham, Nathan Kerins, Robbie Parker
Winteringham Man of the Match: Nathan Kerins

Winteringham faced local rivals Burton for a place in the last sixteen of the Bob Bedford Cup. Despite some heavy over night rain the pitch was in immaculate condition and presented a perfect surface to play football.

It was Winteringham who started the game the better, they were first to the ball all over the park. It wasn’t long before a chance came their way. Dan Hubbard played a ball over the top which the Burton Defender failed to clear, Nathan Kerins pounced on the mistake, drove into the box and shot across goal, unfortunately the ball went inches wide of the far post. Midfield duo John Cunningham and Dave Moulds were winning everything in the middle of the park, and with both full backs willing to get into wide positions, they were able to control the game with quick one and two touch passing.

Lee Markham
Lee Markham - Sweet strike

Winteringham continued to knock the ball about and look very comfortable in possession all over the pitch. Some good inter play down the right worked Lee Markham into some space about 35 yards from goal. He wasted no time in driving the ball goalwards; it was a sweet strike which flew into the top left corner of the net to give Winteringham a deserved lead.

Winteringham continued to press after the restart, and it wasn’t long before another chance came. This time it was the turn of the left full back, Adam Sparrow stripped two defenders for pace down the left and crossed into the box. The cross was met by Nathan Kerins, but the header went just over the bar.

Dave Moulds was subjected to a very bad tackle moments later, not only late, but over the top of the ball. It was a challenge that could have resulted in a serious injury, but after some lengthy treatment, Dave picked himself up and battled on. The game was restarted with a free kick, the ball was hit into the Burton penalty box which was cleared by Rory Cunningham. Another chance fell to Winteringham soon after. Some good interplay between Robbie Parker and Lee Markham, led to Robbie passing the ball into Josh Hubbard’s feet. Josh turned quickly and drove a shot across goal which went wide of the target. The game was being dominated by Winteringham and Burton were struggling to get near the Winteringham goal, and keeper Mick Scott didn’t have a shot to save in the first half.

The chances kept coming for Winteringham. Josh Hubbard put Robbie Parker through on goal, but he shot just over from the right hand side of the penalty box. The next chance fell to Liam Syron, but his shot was saved by the Burton keeper.

With all this pressure it was only a matter of time before Winteringham extended their lead. Lee Markham threw the ball to the feet of Dave Moulds, Dave played it back to Lee who knocked a superb ball to the back post, and Nathan Kerins was on hand to tap the ball past the Burton keeper. Another chance fell when Nathan Kerins beat Rory Cunningham and crossed into the box, Dave Moulds controlled the ball and drove the ball towards the bottom corner, the shot was pushed round the post by the keeper. There was no time to take the corner as the referee blew for half time.

Winteringham started the second half the way they had finished the first. The chances kept coming. John Cunningham took a free kick from the left hand touch line, he swung the ball into the box, but both Nathan Kerins and Josh Hubbard were unable to get onto the end of it. Moment later another good chance came, Dave Moulds played Liam Syron in down the left, he crossed into the box. Nathan Kerins out jumped the defender, but his header went just over the bar. As the chances came and went, Winteringham started to force the game which led to a few mistakes.  Burton’s Nathan Watson pounced onto a lose ball and shot from distance, the ball sailed wide of Mick Scott’s left hand post. Moments later Robbie Parker played in Josh Hubbard who scuffed his shot wide of the Burton goal.

Burton attacked Winteringham down the right through Callum Render, Adam Sparrow’s attempted tackle was late and a free kick was awarded to Burton. As the free kick was chipped into the box, Burton’s Jason Stephenson appeared to trip over his own feet. The referee blew and awarded a penalty kick to Burton. Olly Gowland stepped up, and drove the ball into the top right hand corner leaving the goal keeper no chance. After the restart the game began to get scrappy with neither side really getting hold of the game. The next chance fell to Liam Syron, he turned in the box and shot just over the bar. Moments later Adam Sparrow picked out Nathan Kerins who dropped the ball off to Dave Moulds, who shot over the Burton goal. Liam Syron beat his defender and was hacked down, a free kick was awarded. John Cunningham swung the ball into the box, where Dan Hubbard appeared to be dragged to the ground, but nothing was given.

Robbie Parker
Robbie Parker - beat keeper from tight angle

Moments later a chance fell for Burton to equalise. The striker was played through, Mick Scott was quick off his line to narrow the angle, and the striker shot wide. It was a let-off for Winteringham who were now being put under some pressure as Burton sensed there was something in the game for them. Another chance fell to Nathan Kerins from a Robbie Parker cross, the Burton keeper saved the shot. The play quickly switched to the other end, where Nathan Watson’s strike from the edge of the area looked goal bound, but it went inches wide of the right hand post.

Winteringham sealed victory moments later. Dan Hubbard played the ball into Josh Hubbard. Josh got the ball under control and threaded Robbie Parker in on goal. Robbie Parker beat the keeper from a very tight angle. There was little more action of note before the final whistle was blown. On reflection it was a deserved victory for Winteringham, they were very good in the first half and played some very good stuff. Burton got into the game more in the second half and at 2 – 1 had a very good chance to equalise, but Winteringham dug in and saw the game out to book their place in the quarter finals.

Nathan Kerins was awarded the Man of the Match, but there were some good performances all over the pitch and it was a victory earned by the team. Credit should go to Dom Bowdler, Ant Prior and Wally Grice who turned up, stood on the sidelines, and supported the team, but with the game finely balanced didn’t get chance to take part in the action.
