Jolly Miller 1 v 4 Winteringham (Half time: 1-2) Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 5
by Anth Hubbard
Goals: Luke McMahon (3), Dom Bowdler MOTM: Luke McMahon
Winteringham Reserves returned to their league campaign after getting knocked out of the cup last week. They were able to welcome James Tune back to the side after knee injury. Winteringham started brightly and created a number of chances. They caused Jolly Miller lots of problems down the wings, especially the left, where Luke McMahon had the beating of the full back time and time again. Despite the good attacking play it was Jolly Miller who took the lead. It came from a free kick, two runners were left un-tracked and the striker was left with an easy finish. Winteringham responded quickly and equalised from a corner. Luke McMahon floated the ball into the box, Dom Bowdler powered a header past the Jolly Miller keeper. With only minute remaining until the half time interval Winteringham could have been forgiven for shutting up shop and keeping the scores level into the interval. But they didn’t they continued to push forward and got there just rewards. Striker Sean Stevenson was pulled back in the box and the Referee had no alternative but to award a penalty kick. Luke McMahon blasted the spot kick into the bottom corner of the net. Winteringham started the second half very slowly and Jolly Miller were allowed to apply some pressure, but didn’t really test keeper Matthew Collingwood. Winteringham up their game and started to get hold off the ball. Striker Dom Bowdler was causing all sorts of problem and was unlucky with a strike from distance, the shot thundered off the bar. It was Luke McMahon who extended the lead when he coolly finished a chance that fell to him in the box. Moments later Luke turned defender when he cleared a header off the goal line. Winteringham continued to push forward and had a number of chances to extend their lead. Luke McMahon completed the scoring when his cross was misjudged by the keeper and floated into the goal. Hattrick hero Luke McMahon was awarded the man of the match, it was a close call as there were some good performances, notably Dom Bowdler, James Tune and Ryan Markham, having said that it was a team performance with every player playing their part. Next up it’s a home league game against Real Ale Crown.
