Man of the Match

Winteringham’s County Cup run came to an abrupt end when they met Jubilee Inn of Grimsby. The final score flattered the Grimsby outfit, but they came out worthy winners. They were very clinical in front of goal and battled hard all over the pitch. Jubilee are regulars in the later stages of the County Cup and that experience showed.

The game began in a very scrappy manner, it was destined to be battle with both teams well up for them game. Dave Moulds took a knock after 5 minutes, but carried on after some treatment. Moments later John Cunningham picked up a knock and was replaced by Lee Moulds, which forced a change in formation with Josh Hubbard dropping back into midfield. There were some fierce tackles firing in all over the pitch. The first half chance came when Lee Markham tried his luck from distance, his shot went just over the bar. Lee Moulds had a chance to open the scoring when the ball dropped to him in the box, the Jubilee keeper pushed his shot around the post. From the resulting corner Dan Hubbard forced the keeper into another save with a header. Jubilee hit Winteringham on the counter which led to their first chance which broke the deadlock. It was a shot from the edge of the box which looped up and over the keeper into the top right hand corner. Winteringham soon levelled when Nathan Kerins swung a ball into the box, the cross was fumbled by Jubilee’s keeper, the ball dropped to Lee Moulds who had a simple tap in to level the scoring.

The crucial part of the game came just before and just after half time. Winteringham conceded a second goal virtually as the half time whistle blew. The ball was swung into the box from the left, the Jubilee striker found himself in the box with a free header.

Gavin Hale had to be replaced by Dom Bowdler at half time as he had picked up a knee injury.

Winteringham came flying out of the traps in the second half and had a number of very good chances to level the tie. The first fell to Josh Hubbard. Lee Moulds powered down the right and drove the ball into the box, Josh was stretching to get to the ball and ended up putting his shot over. The next chance fell to Lee Moulds, his shot from inside the penalty area was comfortably saved.  Moments later Gareth Barlow threaded the ball through for Lee Moulds, his shot went agonisingly wide of the right up right. Winteringham were going to rue the missed chances as Jubilee proved to be very clinical in front of goal. They extended their lead when Winteringham switched off from a free kick just outside the penalty area. Jubilee managed to get 3 on 2 down the left, they passed the ball around the defence and crossed to the near post where the Jubilee striker had a simple tap in. Winteringham continued to pile forward trying to find a way back into the game. They were hit by more bad luck when Lee Moulds had to leave the field after picking up a thigh strain, he was replaced by Connor Sturman.

Jubilee scored a fourth when they pounced on a defensive mix up. The Jubilee striker curled the ball into the top right hand corner of the
net. It was another blow as it left Winteringham with a mountain to climb. They did however pull a goal back when Dom Bowdler headed in a cross from David Moulds. Winteringham were pushing forward hoping for a great escape, but as they pushed forward they lost all shape and Jubilee were able to pick them off and restore their three goal advantage. It was another clinical finish by the Jubilee striker. Jubilee saw out the remainder of the game with little incident and were jubilant when the final whistle blew.

Jubilee were a well equipped side with some good players, especially their number 8 who pulled their strings and dominated the middle of the park from the first to the final whistle. It was a deserved victory although on the balance of play maybe a little flattering. Jubilee were more up for the battle and were clinical in front of goal which proved to be the difference. Winteringham were not at full strength with Robbie Parker out injured and both Nathan Kerins and Rick Watson played with injuries, a situation only made worse by a number of players picking up injuries during the game, not that that was an excuse, they simply came up against a very good side who wanted it more on the day. Hopefully Winteringham won’t have to wait another 31 years to have another good run in the County Cup as they proved this season on their day they are more than capable of competing with the best the County has to offer.

Jubilee will meet another Scunthorpe side in the Semi Finals in the form of recent winners Pepperells.

Winteringham still have some big games coming up. Firstly it’s H.T.E Burton in the league which is followed by Pepperells in the quarter finals of the Challenge Cup.
