MFM Academicals 5 v 2 Winteringham (Half time: 0-2) Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 5
by Anth Hubbard
Goals: Dom Bowdler, Luke McMahon (pen) MOTM: Simon Stocks
Winteringham Reserves took on MFM Academicals in a division 5 clash, in a game which proved to be as they say “a game of two halves”. The funny thing was that neither score from each half represented the balance of play. MFM were possibly the better team in the first half and were very unlucky to go in two down and arguably Winteringham were the better team in the second half and created more chances yet some how managed to concede 5 goals.
Winteringham were without recognised goal stopper Matthew Collingwood, so it was down to Ben Griffiths to put on the gloves. Dom Bowdler opened the scoring for Winteringham when he beat the keeper from a tight angle. Luke McMahon added a second from the spot after Sean Stevenson had been dragged down in the box.
MFM found themselves level within minutes of the second half kicking off. The first came from a pot shot from distance and the second from the penalty spot after keeper Ben Griffiths brought down the striker. Winteringham up’d their game for the next 20 minutes and were very unlucky not to go back into the lead. The game turned on around 80 minutes when MFM took the lead rather fortuitously. The heads of the Winteringham players dropped and they allowed MFM to add another two goals late on.
On the balance of play Winteringham will feel hard done by and probably think they did enough to warrant at least a point. On the other hand MFM will feel coming back from 2 goals down that they deserved all 3 points.
