Winteringham 0 v 2 Pepperells (Half time: 0 - 0 ) Scunthorpe Sunday League Division One
by Anthony Hubbard
For the second time in four days Winteringham were to rue not taking their chances. They took on newly crowned Division 1 champions Pepperells at Low Burgage, Winteringham. Auld South Yorkshire had failed to take the opportunity to pile the pressure on Pepperells as they lost both games in a double header with Queen Bess. So Pepperells claimed their second league title without having to kick a ball. There was still something to play for as far as Winteringham were concerned as second spot was still up for grabs. Winteringham opted to stick to the 4-3-3 formation that saw them create endless chances against Auld South four days earlier. The game started at a fierce pace with Winteringham pegging Pepperells back, Dave Moulds was outstanding in the first half and won every header he challenged for and provided a good supply to the strikers. The Winteringham defence looked as solid as ever and restricted Pepperells to one shot from distance in the first half which keeper Rick Watson dealt with easily. There were far too many Winteringham chances to go into detail. Winteringham had four or five one on ones, which were either hit straight at the keeper or blasted wide. Lee Moulds, Dom Bowdler and Gareth Barlow forced the keeper into numerous good saves; the Pepperells keeper was on top form in the first half. The Winteringham shot count was in double figures come half time with Pepperells restricted to one long range effort. The second half began similar to the first with Winteringham going all out to score, the chances kept coming and going, it just wasn't going to be Winteringham's day in front of goal. Midway through the second half the balance of play switched and Pepperells began to pressure Winteringham without having a shot on goal. Then a free kick was awarded to Pepperells on the left hand side of the area, a quick free kick saw the Pepperells left back free in the area, he drove the ball across goal, which ended up nestling in the bottom corner. It was Pepperells first real shot of note. Winteringham made a change shortly after the goal, replacing Lee Moulds with Josh Hubbard. The switch appeared to have paid off when a quick inter change between Josh and Robbie Parker, saw Josh clean through on goal. Josh was pulled to the ground by the Pepperells centre back, it looked a nailed on penalty, but unfortunately the referee didn’t agree. The resulting penalty protests saw Winteringham reduced to 10 men, it was an uncharacteristic show of dissent by the Winteringham side. The sending off saw another Winteringham substitution, Connor Sturman came on to replace John Cunningham. Winteringham were really up against it a goal and a man down, but they didn’t give up and pushed forward looking for an equaliser. As Winteringham pushed forward they left gaps at the back, and Pepperells managed to double their lead when Mark Anderson scored a goal on a Pepperells counter attack. The game ended 0-2, it was unfair on Winteringham based on the balance of play, but yet again they rued missed chances. They had enough chances in the first half to put the game out of Pepperell's reach, but they failed to put any of them away. As the game wore on Pepperells became more of a threat and Winteringham were up against it once they were reduce to 10 men. There were still a large number of positives to take from the game and the season as a whole. Despite conceding two goals on the final day of the season, Winteringham still ended the season with the best defensive record in the division, and only second to Beacon (Div 4) in the entire Scunthorpe Sunday league. The defence has been rock solid since the third game of the season; it has simply been a failure to take chances that has seen Winteringham end the season without any honours. Having said that the performances by the young side do bode well for the forthcoming season. The squad should surely want to build on the positives of this season and have a proper crack at winning honours in the forthcoming season.
