Winteringham 5 v 0 Prior Cobra Reserves (Half time: 3-0) Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 5
by Anthony Hubbard
Goals: Sean Stevenson 3, John Cunningham, Andrew Pirie MOTM: Mark Bennett
Winteringham Reserves took on under strengthed Priory Cobra Reserves in their first league game of the campaign. Winteringham started a little tentatively, which wasn't surprising it being the first game of the current season. It took around 15 minutes for Winteringham to settle into any rhythm, at which time they started to pass the ball about well. They were soon rewarded by a Sean Stevenson goal. John threaded the ball through and Sean chipped the ball passed the on rushing keeper. Priory Cobras lost an out field player due to injury, but were unable to replace him as they had no substitutes available to them. Sean doubled his tally with a close range header moments later. Sean thought he had completed his hattrick when he swung a cross in from the left which flew straight into the top corner (ala Steven Gerrard) but the referee ruled the goal out for offside. Winteringham were creating a lot of chances but were failing to put them away. John Cunningham did extend the lead when his shot from just outside the box despite taking a deflection beat the Priory keeper. Winteringham led 3-0 going into the half time interval.
After the restart Winteringham continued to dominate possession which wasn't surprising considering the numerical advantage. Priory Cobra's did defend with some spirit and were not prepared to be a walk over. Despite the good defending Winteringham did create a number of very good chances which they failed to take. Sean Stevenson did manage to complete his hattrick midway through the second half and Andrew Pirie completed the scoring before the final whistle with a strike just inside the penalty area. It was a good result for Winteringham as they are currently playing catch up with the majority of the team having already played 4 or 5 games. Winteringham will feel though that they could have got more from the game having played the majority of the game with a numerical advantage, but some good defending and poor finishing restricted Winteringham Reserves to a 5-0 win.
