Queen Bess 2 v 0 Winteringham (Half time: 1-0) Scunthorpe Sunday League Divisional Cup
by Anthony Hubbard
Goals: - MOTM:Rick Watson
Bess goalscorer: Paul Grimes 2 (1 pen)
Winteringham FC took on Queen Bess in the quarter finals of the Divisional Cup. The teams were well matched, but unfortunately for Winteringham Bess had striker Paul Grimes who proved to be the difference between the two sides. It was a day where Winteringham had to use their squad with injuries and suspensions restricting Tony Simon’s options. Lee Moulds came back into the side in the absence of Gareth Barlow, and posed a threat early on. He looked set to put Winteringham in front when he was put clean through on goal, but a very a late lineman’s flag adjudged him to be offside. A slight confusion between the Winteringham defence and keeper allowed Paul Grimes through on goal; he wasted no time in putting Bess in front. The remainder of the half was even with both side creating chances, but unfortunately for the strikers both keepers were on top form and pulled off some good saves. Winteringham came out all guns blazing in the second half looking to find a way back into the tie. As Winteringham pushed forward they left themselves exposed at the back. Winteringham keeper Rick Watson was in fine form and pulled off some very good saves. At the other end the Bess keeper was equal to everything Winteringham threw at him. Bess extended their lead from the penalty spot when Paul Grimes coolly placed the spot kick in the corner of the net. Winteringham tried to find a way back into the game but lacked the creativity to breach the Bess defence. Paul Grimes proved to be the difference between the two sides on the day, all Bess’s good play came through him. Winteringham matched Bess in every other department but lacked a spark to find the killer pass or bit of creativity to swing the game in their favour. Neither side particularly played at their best, but Bess had a little more cutting edge with Grimes up top. The next three games could determine how successful Winteringham are going to be this season. Firstly it’s a County Cup tie against Real Ropery of Gainsborough. Then its two meeting with Pepperells in the space of seven days, one in the league and the other in the Challenge Cup.
