Queen Bess 1 v 3 Winteringham FC
 (Half time: 1 - 1)
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division One

by Anthony Hubbard

Winteringham Goalscorers: Robbie Parker, Nathan Kerins, Lee Moulds
Winteringham Man of the Match: Ady Brocklesby

Winteringham took on Queen Bess in their fifth league game of the season, aiming to keep their recent revival alive. Winteringham started very slowly and were allowing Queen Bess too much time and space. A free kick was awarded to Bess out on the right hand touch line; the ball was swung towards the back post for an oncoming Bess player to head into the net. It was a stupid goal to concede which had come from a failure to track players running off the ball.

After the restart Winteringham began to up the tempo and started to dominate possession. Dave Moulds won all the bits and pieces in midfield, while Ady Brocklesby and Dan Hubbard kept things tight at the back. Winteringham thought they had equalised when Nathan Kerins and Lee Markham played a quick one two, which left Lee in space to cross into the box, and the ball was flicked past the keeper, unfortunately a late flag ruled the goal out. Winteringham continued to pressure and moments later and a half chance dropped to Liam Syron. Unfortunately he was unable to get his shot away quickly enough and was closed down by the Bess defence. There was a brief moment of danger at the other end when Bess caught Winteringham on the break and had looked to have extended their lead; luckily Dan Hubbard was on hand to clear the ball off the line.

Moments before half time Winteringham got the equaliser they were looking for. Some good interplay between Robbie Parker and Nathan Kerins put Robbie through on goal with only the keeper to beat. Robbie didn’t disappoint and coolly struck the ball into the left corner of the net with his left foot. Winteringham continued to press looking to get their noses in front before half time; they got a number of half chances but were unable to convert any of them.

After the half time interval Winteringham started as they finished the first and really started to press Bess. Nathan Kerins extended Winteringham's lead after about 5 minutes of play. Some good work down the left from Liam Syron lead to a mix up in the Bess defence which lead to Nathan Kerins bending the ball past the keeper and into the bottom corner. Winteringham were forced to make a change as Dan Hubbard had picked up a knock. He was replaced by Lee Moulds. The change led to a quick reshuffle, fortunately it didn’t stop Winteringham dominating as they continued to out-fight Bess all over the pitch.

Robbie Parker latched onto a through ball and raced into the penalty area where he was hacked down by a Bess defender. The referee wasted no time in awarding a penalty to Winteringham. Lee Moulds stepped up to take the penalty, and fired the ball into the bottom left corner leaving the keeper with no chance. Moments after Winteringham’s third goal, Lee Moulds went into a 50/50 challenge with a Bess player. The Bess player jumped up and began pushing Lee which led to a bit of hand bags. After things calmed downed the referee had judged Lee to be the main instigator and he was issued a red card.

There were 20 minutes remaining when Winteringham went down to 10 men, the players all drew on the previous week's performance where they had done the same, they all dug in and fought tooth and nail for the cause. Winteringham had a bit more bad luck when Dave Moulds had to be replaced after a clash of heads. It led to another quick reshuffle, but it didn’t effect the team as a whole. The defence remained solid for the remainder of the game, with keeper Mick Scott barely having a shot to save, although when called upon he was as solid as ever. It was actually Winteringham who created the better chances in the dying minutes, Ant Prior, and Nathan Kerins both having half chances but were unable to extend the lead.

Every player gave everything, it was a superb performance all round and yet another positive to build on. The players are starting to have the same belief that Tony, Sid and Wally have in them. If Winteringham can play at this level week in week out they will be in with a chance of winning some silverware come the end of the season.  It’s a big four weeks ahead for this young side, with league games against Pepperells and Burton as well as cup ties against Auld South and DSV reserves.
