Winteringham 2 v 2 Queen Bess (Half time: 1 - 2 ) Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 1
by Anthony Hubbard
Winteringham opened their league campaign against the long established Queen Bess. It was a tough opening tie for both teams. The game was a very scrappy affair with an extremely biased wind. Queen Bess opted to play with the wind in the first half which enabled them to play to their strengths, playing long balls over the top for Paul Grimes to latch onto. The opening goal came from the long ball tactic, Paul Grimes who appeared to be standing at least 5 yards offside, latched onto a long ball and slotted it under the diving keeper. The linesman’s flag was over ruled by the referee and the goal stood. Queen Bess had a spell of dominance after the goal with the Winteringham midfield and defence at sixes and sevens. Despite their dominance Bess failed to extend their lead. Winteringham began to get into the game and Gareth Barlow was unlucky not to equalize when he shot from just inside the Bess penalty area. Moments later Lee Moulds raced through on goal, he rounded the keeper but unfortunately had been pushed a bit too wide to get a shot on goal. Lee Moulds did equalise moments later, the ball was won through good pressure then passed to Lee, Lee powered into the box and passed the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Winteringham were now on top and were pressing Bess back despite them having the wind in their favour. A freekick was awarded on the edge of the Bess area, the freekick broke down and a Bess defender lumped the ball forward. A mix up in the Winteringham defence let in Paul Grimes to score his second goal of the game.

After the restart Winteringham continued to press. A Corner swung in by Josh Hubbard found the head of Gareth Barlow, unfortunately Gaz’s header went just over the bar. Moments later Gaz won the ball just inside the Winteringham half, he turned and played the ball through to Lee Moulds. Lee Moulds raced down the left cut into the box and shot just wide of the far post. The half time whistle was blown moments later. After the half time interval Bess started the stronger and nearly caught Winteringham cold. A long ball into the box found Paul Grimes and from 5 yards out he put the ball over the bar. It was a big let off which woke Winteringham up and they began to start passing the ball around and creating chances. The equaliser soon came. Nathan Kerins found himself in space on the left wing, he whipped in a superb cross to the far post, which Gaz Barlow wasted no time in heading past the keeper into the back of the net. Winteringham dominated the possession in the second half but were unable to take the lead. Some very good corners from Josh Hubbard led to a number of scrabbles in the box, but Bess always seems to get in a vital block or clearance. Bess broke in the dying minutes, Paul Grimes won a free kick on the edge of the area. He took the free kick which appeared to be goal bound, but keeper Rick Watson pulled off a fine save to keep the scores even. The final whistle was blown soon after. On reflection a draw was a fair result with neither side playing at their best and neither being able to find the cutting edge to see off the other side. Both sides will have aspirations of being in the hunt for trophies come the end of the season, but both will need to improve on todays performance to be in with a shout of winning some silverware.
