Winteringham Reserves again started the game down to the bare bones after two players let them down, starting the game with just one sub!
In driving wind and rain the game began in a very scrappy manner with both sides struggling to master the conditions, inevitably it was a defensive error which led to the opening goal for the home side. A hopeful punt forward by the Real Ale goalkeeper was about to be headed away by Graham King only for him to get a call from one of his defensive colleagues, who promptly missed the ball and allowed the Real Ale forward to race through and lob the advancing Colly.
The game continued in a scrappy fashion until 10 minutes to half time when first Real Ale increased their lead with a header from a quality free kick into the box and Winteringham replying when their best move of the game led to Sean Stevenson winning a penalty which was converted by Simon Stocks.
Half time saw a slight change in position for a number of players and it nearly paid dividends when first Stu Whittam and then James Tune were both put through one on one but neither player was able to drag Winteringham back into the game.
Real Ale then took control with a very controversial third goal. The Real Ale player raced through and put the ball past Colly but another Real Ale player following up put the ball in the net despite been in an offside position, the referee awarding the goal despite the protests.
Possibly the referee wanted to make amends when two minutes later he awarded Winteringham the strangest penalty of the season claiming there was a push in the area. Both sets of players were bemused but with five minutes to go it gave Winteringham a lifeline, Simon Stocks stepped up but the keeper blocked the spot kick with devastating effect as the rebound from the save set his side up for a counter attack as the Real Ale striker went through to complete the scoring.
Special mention should go to Stuart Whittam and Graham King who both made their debuts for the club in difficult conditions but both played well and will be a great credit to the club, also to Phil Denham, who despite injury turned up and ran the line for 90 minutes in the worst conditions of the season. The on-going problem for the Reserves is not having a settled side from one week to the next. Perhaps with the new additions a bit of consistency can be achieved and an improvement in results.
Next up is another away game against Kirton Rangers.
