Man of the Match performance capped by a fine goal

Winteringham found themselves on the right side of a 10 goal thriller when they took on Real Ropery of Gainsborough in the Lincolnshire Sunday Cup. The game had been postponed for 6 weeks due to the terrible weather that England has suffered over the previous months. It was Winteringham’s home game but they agreed to move the fixture to Gainsborough in a bid to get the game played as their pitch was still under water.

It was the Gainsborough side that took the lead when a diagonal ball from left to right caused the defence problems, the Real Ropery striker sprinted clear and passed the ball into the back of the net. Winteringham soon equalised when the ball fell to Gareth Barlow in the penalty area, he wasted no time in placing the ball past the keeper to level the scores.

Winteringham took the lead when Gavin Hale launched a long throw into the box, Gareth Barlow flicked the ball onto the back post where Robbie Parker controlled the ball with his head before heading into the empty net.

The lead was extended when after a goal mouth scramble the ball fell to Josh Hubbard at the far post, Josh blasted the ball into the net to put Winteringham into a 3-1 lead. Winteringham scored a fourth just before half time, Gareth Barlow raced into the box where Nathan Kerins took the initiative and passed the ball under the Real Ropery keeper.

After the half time interval Winteringham continued to push and soon found themselves with a four goal lead. The fifth goal came from the penalty spot after Gareth Barlow was hacked down in the box. Josh Hubbard stepped up and powered the ball into the corner of the net. Real Ropery pulled a goal back when the referee awarded a free kick some 30 odd yards from goal. The attacker blasted the ball into the top corner of the net leaving the keeper with no chance. Winteringham soon restored the four goal advantage when Lee Moulds powered down the left, cut into the penalty box and slotted the ball past the keeper.

Winteringham conceded another sloppy goal when another diagonal ball from left to right caused confusion in the left side of the defence which allowed the Real Ropery attacker in on goal, he gave keeper Rick Watson no chance by picking out the bottom corner. The goal gave Real Ropery fresh impetus and they started to apply some pressure to the Winteringham back four. Keeper Rick Watson pulled off a fine save when the Ropery attacker blasted a shot from close range. Moment’s later defender Dan Hubbard made a last ditch tackle to prevent Ropery pulling another goal back.

Lee Markham rounded off the scoring and capped a man of the match performance when his left footed driven shot found the top left hand corner of the net. Winteringham had a number of chances in the dying minutes but were unable to extend their lead further.

Winteringham came out worthy winners, they did ride their luck in defence at times, but they had too much quality in attack for Real Ropery to cope with. Real Ropery battled hard and were a well equipped outfit up top, but Winteringham’s quality got them through a very scrappy game. The victory puts Winteringham FC into the quarter finals of the Lincolnshire Sunday Cup for the first time in their 31 year history. They are scheduled to play Jubilee Inn of Grimsby at Low Burgage, Winteringham on Sunday 31st January.
