Winteringham roar at Lions
Red Lion 1 - 1 Winteringham (Half-time 0 - 0)
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 1
by Anthony Hubbard
On Sunday 20th April Winteringham played Red Lion of Barton at Baygarth School. An early morning down pour had led to near perfect playing conditions. With Winteringham Reserves playing at the same time and several players being unavailable, manager Tony Simons was forced into drafting in a couple of new faces.
The game started off a little scrappy with neither side managing to get a firm foot hold on the game in the early stages. After around 10 minutes the Winteringham players seemed to settle and began to create some good chances, but unfortunately were unable to test the goal keeper. Regular Winteringham Goalkeeper Rick Watson was filling in at centre back, in the absence of Carl Hull, with long club servant Mick Scott back in between the sticks. The Winteringham defence never really looked in any danger in the first half, with the majority of Red Lion’s attacks being made up of long balls. Then on 40 minutes Dan Hubbard seemed to calmly cut out a Red Lion attack by getting his body in between the ball and the player to allow Mick to come to collect the ball. To everyone’s amazement the referee awarded a penalty. Luckily justice was done when the Red Lion striker blasted the ball over the bar.
During the half time interval Ian Durnian and Tony Simons offered some encouragement and advice to their players. They highlighted how well they had played and with a little more composure in front of goal could have been leading.
The second half started off very well for Winteringham as they had the majority of the play. Debutant Neil O’Hagan showed some good touches playing up front with Robbie Parker. Around 10 minutes into the second half Neil beat two Red Lion defenders then calmly crossed the ball left footed; Robbie Parker was on hand to head the ball past the keeper to give Winteringham a deserved lead. After the goal Winteringham continued to press, but were unable to find a second goal to kill off the game.
Midway through the second half the referee awarded Red Lion a second penalty, this time even the Red Lion players were amazed. Red Lion didn’t waste the second opportunity and although Mick Scott went the right way he was unable to save the penalty. After the equaliser both teams seemed to have settled for a draw and although both created some half chances neither team seemed to want to bust a gut to win the game. Moments before the final whistle Robbie Parker raced clear of the defence, the keeper managed to get a hand on the ball which pushed Robbie wide of goal, Robbie crossed into the box, but unfortunately no Winteringham player was able to get on the end of it.
On reflection a draw was possibly a fair result although I personally feel Winteringham did more in the 90 minutes to try to win the game. There were some good Winteringham performances on the day, none more so the debutant Matt Baxter. Matt bossed the midfield for the full 90 minutes and added a bit of steel to the young side. Dan Hubbard recaptured the form that saw him get a call up to Barton Reserves and had a superb game at centre back. Dave Moulds again continued his good run of form and played very well in centre midfield.
Next up it’s Red Lion again, which is the final game of the season, so the Winteringham players will be looking to go out on a high.
