Winteringham roar at Lions

Winteringham 3 - 2 Red Lion
(Half-time 1 - 1)

Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 1

by Anthony Hubbard

On a very humid Sunday afternoon Winteringham FC took on Red Lion for the second time in 7 days. The previous meeting had ended up in a 1 – 1 draw.  With it being the final league game of the season neither side wanted to end the season with a defeat.

In the early stages of the 1st half Red Lion were the more dominant team, having more of the ball and looking more up for the fight. The Winteringham players started very slowly and it wasn’t until they found themselves a goal down that they started to wake up. It was end to end stuff with very little real quality from either side. After some good work down the right side, Robbie Parker crossed into the box, Sean Stevenson managed to get on the end of the cross but was unable to guide the ball goalwards. Moments later some more good work from Robbie Parker down the right led to Dave Moulds receiving the ball just inside the penalty area, he struck the ball with his right foot, it was blocked by the defender, but Dave wasted no time in pouncing on the loose ball and drove it left footed into the top corner of the goal! The remainder of the 1st half went by with very little incident.

During the half time team talk Ian Durnian fired into his players, demanding more and questioned their desire to win the game. The half time team talked seemed to have paid off as the Winteringham players performed much better in the second half. They began to dominate the play and put some good passing moves together. The pressure began to tell when Robbie Parker was brought down in the penalty area. Robbie took the penalty himself, and he calmly drove the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal. The lead was no more than Winteringham deserved as they had been dictating the play, as every Winteringham player was putting in far more effort than they had in the 1st half. Winteringham continued to press after the restart, and creating some very good chances, but strikers Sean Stevenson and Robbie Parker just couldn’t find that killer touch in front of goal.

Midway through the second half it appeared two controversial refereeing decisions were going to cost Winteringham. The first was the sending off of Dave Moulds after a minor coming together with a Red Lion Defender. Then around five minutes later Red Lion were awarded a penalty, which they scored to level the game 2 – 2. After the equaliser Red Lion seemed to take it for granted they were going to go on to win the game, and left gaps in the defence which Robbie and Sean started to exploit. Winteringham were awarded a second penalty after Robbie Parker was dragged down in the box, yet again Robbie stepped up and calming struck it past the keeper.

Moments after the restart Robbie raced through on goal, but the keeper was quick off his line and managed to smother the shot. The game ended with Winteringham winning 3 -2.  It was a hard fought victory and nothing more than they deserved after a fine second half performance.
