Winteringham Reserves had the chance to top the table for the first time this season when they faced Valley View at West Halton Playing Fields. Winteringham started very brightly despite the blustery conditions and were unlucky not to take an early lead. Despite Winteringham's dominance they were unable to test the Valley View keeper in the opening stages of the game. Winteringham looked rock solid at the back and keeper Ian Berridge had little to do. Winteringham continued to pressure Valley View but some wayward shooting caused by a lack of composure in front of goal let them down. The sides went into half time level. After the restart it was more of the same, Winteringham dominating the game, but unable to find a way past the Valley View keeper, who denied Keil Leisk with a very good save early on in the second half. Winteringham carried on piling on the pressure but Valley View were resolute and restricted Winteringham to shots from distance. It seemed inevitable that the way the game was going Valley View would snatch something and they did. A mistake down the left led to the Valley View striker getting a sight of goal, he wasted no time in placing the ball into the net. It was Valley View's first attack of real merit. It got better moments later for Valley View, as Winteringham piled forward looking for a deserved equaliser, Valley View attacked again down the left, a foul led to a free kick being awarded. The free kick was floated to the back post where an unmarked attacker was on hand to head past the keeper. Winteringham did get a life line, a corner was swung in from the right and Karl Hull managed to scramble the ball over line. In the dying minute Winteringham looked set to get an equaliser but unfortunately Phil Denham was unable to find the killer touch and the game ended in defeat for Winteringham.
Valley View were delighted and admitted it was a real smash and grab. It was a good performance by Winteringham who dominated for the majority of the game and if it had been for a little more composure in the final third could have put the game to bed before half time. It just wasn’t to be and it’s another lesson to learn for Ian Brown's men, but they must take some heart from the performance if not the result.
