Four-Goal Gaz Winteringham
Winterton Rovers 4 - 2 Winteringham
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 1
by Anthony Hubbard
On Sunday 13th April Winteringham took on local rivals Winterton Rovers. The previous meeting had seen Winteringham beat Rovers 5-0, in what was probably Winteringham’s best performance of the season. With players still out injured Winteringham manager Tony Simons had to draft in some reserve team players.
The Winterton player were definitely the more fired up come kick off, and they started the stronger. Winteringham looked disorganised all across the pitch and struggled to get into the game in the early stages. An unfortunate slip at the vital moment led to Winterton scoring their first goal, it was scored by Barton Town Striker Gaz Barlow, who Dan Hubbard had superbly marked out of the game during the first encounter. Before the Winteringham Players knew it they were 3 goals down and Gaz had scored a hat trick.
It was only after going 3 goals down that the Winteringham players seemed to wake up and started to create some chances of their own. Liam Syron had two very good chances in quick succession, but his early season goal scoring form has eluded him in recent weeks. Winteringham were awarded a free kick about 25 yards from goal, up step centre back Carl Hull to superbly curl the ball into the top corner. This gave Winteringham a lifeline, but moments before half time another defensive lapses led to Winterton scoring a fourth.
During the half time interval Ian Durnian demanded more from the players, stating they were playing for pride and that every player had to give more in the second half. The inspirational words definitely paid off, as Winteringham were the better side in the second half. After some continued pressure, Robbie Parker back in his usual position of striker scored early on in the second half. Winteringham continued to press looking for another goal that would have seen them back in the game. Adam Sparrow had a superb second half and caused Winterton endless problems as he attacked down the left. Winterton couldn’t deal with his pace, as he seemed to effortlessly beat players. It wasn’t all one way traffic though as Winterton always looked dangerous on the counter attack and as well as hitting post they forced goal keeper Paul Mitchell into some very good saves.
For all of Winteringham’s possession in the second half they unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net. It was a much better performance than that of the first half and the players should take some pride from that, it would have been easy to have rolled over and ended up getting a battering, but the player dug in and worked as a team and can feel a little unfortunate not to have got more from the game.
With only two games remaining a lot of people’s thoughts may be looking towards next season, as Tony Simon’s young side will be better for this season. It has been hard work and hasn’t been without its problems, but the players will be stronger for it. And with injured players to come back in and a few new players wanting to come to the club the future looks bright, although it may not seem like it after Sunday’s result.
