Winteringham FC 4 v 1 Winterton Rovers (Half time: 2 - 0 ) Division One
by Anthony Hubbard
Winteringham Goalscorers: Lee Moulds 3, Nathan Kerins Winteringham Man of the Match: Dave Moulds
Local bragging rights go to Winteringham. The 1st local derby between Winteringham and Winterton was played at Low Burgage Winteringham in very windy conditions. Winteringham were looking to start turning their recent good performances into results.
They started very brightly, playing with the wind behind them.
It took Lee Moulds a matter of minutes to break the deadlock.
Winteringham had the majority of the ball in the first half and were using the wind to their advantage, as Winterton were holding a very high line which was leaving a lot of space for forwards Lee Moulds and Nathan Kerins to exploit.
Winteringham had numerous chances to extend their lead and Lee Moulds hit the woodwork on more than one occasion. Lee did extend Winteringham’s lead when he beat the offside trap and raced through and drove the ball past the on-rushing keeper.
The second half saw Winteringham playing into the wind, but this didn’t stop them dominating the game. Lee Moulds completed his hat-trick early in the second half with another fine strike.
Winterton did their best to use the wind to their advantage by playing very direct. They constantly thumped the ball long, but this was a tactic that Winteringham back four were more than capable of dealing with. Dan Hubbard in particular had a very good second half making some vital tackles, blocks and headers. Nathan Kerins sealed the victory with his third goal in three games; he popped up at the back post and struck the ball past the Winterton keeper. Winterton did get a consolation goal when they were awarded a penalty late on in the game. The decision was a puzzling one, but was in no way going to affect the final result. Winteringham saw out the remainder of the game without any problems as the back four and midfield remained solid throughout. The result never really looked in any doubt, the Winteringham players grafted for the full 90 minutes and deserved their first league victory of the season. There were some good performances on the day, Lee Moulds with his second hat-trick of the season, Dan Hubbard for his solid performance at centre back but it was Dave Moulds who was awarded the man of the match for his battling performance in centre midfield.
