Local Bragging Rights Go to Winteringham!
Winteringham 5 - 0 Winterton Rovers
Scunthorpe Sunday League Division 1
by Anthony Hubbard
When you think of derby matches you think of games that are hard fought, evenly balanced and usually decided by the odd goal. The clash between Winteringham and local rivals Winterton was definitely hard fought but only one team was doing the fighting. Winterton couldn’t cope with the sheer work rate, skill, and desire to win shown by Tony Simons' all stars. The management team has been demanding such a performance all season, and what a day to deliver, when you playing your nearest rivals! Not only does the win mean the Winteringham players have the bragging rights, it also moves Winteringham above Winterton in the league, and with a game in hand.
It was good to see new club captain Ian (Sid) Durnian (who unfortunately suffered an injury in last week's game) present to offer encouragement and guidance to the team of youngsters as well as assist Tony and Wally. Everything that Winteringham did on the day was 100% professional, from preparing the pitch, pre-match team talks, half-time team talk and the performance by the players on the pitch. Every single player deserves credit for the win, as every player gave everything for the cause and there were some outstanding performances on the day. None more so than Man of the Match and hattrick hero Lee Moulds. Lee had a superb game, he bullied the Winterton back four for the full ninety minutes, and they couldn’t handle his pace, aggression, work rate and will to win.
Lee Moulds open the scoring, after a fine through ball from Dan Hubbard split the defence in two. Lee latch onto the pass, left the 2 centre backs for dead and kept his composure to beat the keeper. Dan Hubbard was filling at centre back for the injured Lee Markham. For the remainder of the first half Winteringham kept piling on the pressure, winning every 50/50 ball and controlling the play. They never let the Winterton players settle on the ball; they were straight in their faces not allowing them to pick a pass. It was looking like Winteringham were going to fail to capitalise on their dominance, until Dan Hubbard managed to pick out Robbie Parker, who’s header beat the keeper but hit the bar, luckily Robbie had the awareness to follow the ball in and managed to side foot the rebound into an empty net.
Despite Winterton having Barton Town’s "goal machine", Gaz Barlow up front, they never troubled the Winteringham keeper in the first half.

Dan Hubbard - to the rescue when Winterton seemed odds-on to score

The second half started as the first did, with Winteringham looking more up for the fight and winning most of the loose balls. Five minutes into the second half a momentary lapse in concentration appeared to have given Gaz Barlow the half chance he needed, but between Dan Hubbard and goalkeeper Rick Watson the danger was soon killed off. After that Winterton didn’t really create any chances as the Winteringham back four remained solid.
The third goal fell to debutant Alan Ingledew. He struck the ball with his left foot from a tight angle, the power and accuracy gave the keeper no chance whatsoever. After some good inter-play between Dave Moulds and Robbie Parker down the right, Lee Moulds found a yard of space just inside the area, and without a second thought he turned and fired the ball left footed into the top left hand corner of the net. Lee Moulds completed his hat-trick after Winterton right back Ryan Markham conceded a penalty against his former club. Lee stepped up and coolly struck the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.
The demolition was complete. All the hard work prior to and during the match had paid off when the final whistle blew and it was the Winteringham players leaving the field with smiles on their faces.
I would like to mention Matty Durnian and Lee Markham who are both out injured and barely able to walk, but made the journey across the cow field to support their team. We wish them a speedy recovery.
The Winterton players and management team deserve credit too, despite being soundly beaten on the day, they still joined the Winteringham boys back in the Ferry Boat Inn for some refreshments and light-hearted banter!
